After four months away from the microphone, Julie and Peter return to the Real Recovery Podcast with one of their most powerful episodes yet. What began as a routine recording schedule was interrupted when Peter received a life-changing cancer diagnosis, requiring 36 radiation treatments and months of chemotherapy. This deeply personal update episode reveals how the tools learned in recovery became essential for navigating not just addiction, but life's most challenging moments.
Peter's cancer journey began unexpectedly during a camping trip when he noticed persistent cold-like symptoms that wouldn't resolve. What started as a simple sore throat evolved over months into swollen lymph nodes that ultimately required urgent medical attention. The ultrasound revealed the devastating news - cancer had taken hold, launching Peter into a complex world of multiple specialists, treatment plans, and life-altering decisions.
The treatment process proved as challenging as the diagnosis itself. Thirty-six radiation treatments targeted at his throat and neck created blistering both inside his mouth and on his skin, requiring burn victim cream for healing. The combination of radiation and two types of chemotherapy left Peter unable to eat solid foods for months, resulting in a dramatic 40-pound weight loss that he jokingly calls the silver lining of his ordeal.
Throughout this medical crisis, Peter discovered that his recovery toolkit became his survival mechanism. The meditation practices he had developed, particularly his "mountain" visualization of staying present like Mount Hood, kept him grounded when facing uncertainty about his future. The principle of taking life one day at a time, so fundamental to addiction recovery, proved equally vital when confronting cancer treatment.
"I don't think I would've come through this as well as I have... Because of being in recovery and all the tools that I've learned in recovery I've been able to handle this, I believe in a way that I don't think I would've been able to had I not had that in my, those tools, in my tool belt."
— Peter D
The recovery community's support network demonstrated its true power during Peter's illness. Fellow group members visited him during chemotherapy sessions, brought meals for his husband Justin, sent cards and flowers from across the country, and included him in meeting prayers. This extended family, as they appropriately call their recovery group, provided the emotional sustenance that medical treatment alone could not offer.
Julie's four months weren't without their own challenges. A diabetes diagnosis added to her existing health conditions including thyroid issues and trigeminal neuralgia, creating what she calls a "triple threat" of medical concerns. However, her new career opportunity presented unexpected blessings - working for what she describes as "the best company in Portland," one that actively supports community nonprofits and maintains genuine diversity and ethical practices.
"When I pray, I know that I have one of the best foundations in this whole world because of the shit I've made it through. And I haven't struggled with the fact of am I gonna go out and use... It's not an option."
— Julie L
The episode reveals remarkable updates about previous podcast guests, demonstrating the ripple effects of recovery in the community. Bo received peer of the year recognition from Oregon Recovers, Tony expanded his treatment center operations with a multi-million-dollar facility, and Amanda opened new recovery services in underserved Grant's Pass. These success stories illustrate how recovery creates not just personal transformation but community-wide positive impact.
Both hosts reflect on how recovery principles apply beyond addiction to all of life's major challenges. Peter's ability to avoid "ruminating" about past regrets or future fears, Julie's practice of pausing before reacting, and both hosts' reliance on community support demonstrate that recovery tools are truly life skills applicable to any crisis.
This powerful update episode serves as a testament to recovery's transformative impact extending far beyond addiction. Peter's cancer journey and Julie's career transition demonstrate that the principles learned in recovery - staying present, accepting help, maintaining community connections, and taking life one day at a time - become invaluable tools for navigating any of life's major challenges. Their return to podcasting represents not just personal resilience but a commitment to sharing hope with others facing their own difficult journeys.
